Welcome to the Heywood Chess Club website!
last updated 3rd July 2022
This week the 6th July will be a match night with us taking on Chorlton but everyone is still welcome to come and try to get their club championship matches out of the way, sadly Bill Walton has had to pull out due to him moving away from the area and his final games will be awarded to his opponent as a default win. Their are not many matches left to be played and of course Dave has already been crowned club Champion (see below) but there is still the minor places to play for. For the latest position check here.
This Dave Almond on the right receiving the Championship trophy from Club secretary Steve Flaherty.
This was the crucial club championship match Dave v Tony Jinks (below).
Below Steve Flaherty and Paul Curran at the club a few weeks ago.
Below is our new Junior Xavery Smyk playing against John Pickersgill at the club a few weeks ago.
We played our first match away last week in the East Lancs summer league at Denton and was beaten by 3.5 - 1.5 for details go here. We also had our cup match in the East Lancs summer league away at Eccles and was a bit of a mismatch but we did not disgrace ourselves we managed a full team of 6 but were beaten by 5 - 1, both Tony Jinks and Paul Curran got very good draws with both players heavily out graded by almost 300 points! So well done to one and all a valiant effort under the circumstances. Match details can be found here. As above we take on Chorlton this Wednesday so all the best to the team.
Soon to be announced Heywood Chess Club Knock out competition, to begin after the completion of the Club Championship which will be a two part affair, first a 4 round swiss individual followed by the top 4 meeting in a knock out semi final and then final.
All members are to be reminded that club matches are serious games and that noise and chatter should be kept to a bare minimum please respect players who are trying to concentrate. Also a point to note we have noted that some of our posh chess sets are getting damaged (chips off some pieces)! Members are reminded that these are expensive items and should be handled carefully. These sets should be stored carefully in the right hand cupboard in the lift up lid, please do not slam it down!
We had a county game a few weeks ago and Lancashire were unfortunately beaten by Surrey in area semi finals. Both our under 1650 and under 2050 teams were defeated by scores of 7 - 9, unlucky this year but well played to all Heywood players. For details check here.

Chess Club housekeeping
Just a reminder to :
1. Leave the room as you found it ie two chairs on both sides of the tables, boiler in kitchen switched off, lights switched off, glasses returned to the bar area.
2. Help to save the planet by ensuring the digital clocks are switched off before returning them to their boxes.
I think that's all for now.
See you at the club,
Steve Flaherty😃
